DIRECTIONS:
Spirit Moves Studio (445 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC) is located at the foot of the overpass where Savannah Highway crosses Folly Rd. Blvd. heading downtown. It can be a little tricky so here's what you do:

From West Ashley or James Island, it's pretty simple - take Savannah Highway (17) like you're going downtown. Once you cross Wesley Dr. (the road that connects 17 and 61, by Ye Olde Fashioned Ice Cream), look for the overpass, and turn Right into the driveway at its base.

From East Cooper, downtown, or I-26 - you will cross the Ashley River Bridge, get off on Highway 61 (St. Andrews Blvd., the first road on the Right off the bridge), and then take the first Left, which is Wesley Blvd. Then take the next Left, which puts you on Savannah Highway, pointed back downtown. From there, look for the overpass, and turn Right into the driveway at its base. You're basically doing a little hook around to get there.

Just be ready for the turn!

There are two parking lots - one before the building, and a bigger one in back.

You can exit the parking lot either onto 17 headed downtown (or use the switchback on 17 to go back to West Ashley), or onto Folly Rd. headed to South Windermere.

This is the official Contest Rules. You may only enter one cupcake per category. For each category you are entering, please submit three cupcakes (one for each judge). For this contest, cupcakes must be regular sized. Also, please note that cupcakes will not be refrigerated, so consider ingredients that may melt or spoil and affect overall judging.

Example: if you enter Best Thanksgiving, please submit 3 for each judge to make. If you enter Best Thanksgiving and Most Original, you must enter 6 total, one for each judge for Best Thanksgiving and Most Original.

Originally from Greenville, SC, Jason Groce has been in Charleston for 10 years. He is a local bartender and comedian and has been doing stand-up, sketch and improv comedy for the past 6 years. He enjoys paying other people to work on his new house and loves spending time with his pit bull, Gaines. His cupcake experience is vast, starting with his mom's Easter cupcakes with jelly beans and green-dyed shaved coconut.

One day I wondered: could henna be made into shampoo bars and give color? It took a week of intense experimentation, but I did it. Pattison's Academy - This Year's Charity at CupcakeCamp Charleston

The second annual CupcakeCamp Charleston will be held at Spirit Moves Studio (445 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC) on November 5, 2011, 3-5 PM. This FREE event will bring together dessert foodies to share and show off their love of cupcakes. Originating in San Francisco, CupcakeCamp brings people together and promotes community all over the world.

While CupcakeCamp Charleston believes in celebrating cupcakes, community and creativity, we also believe in giving back. To us, that means helping out local charities. This year Pattison's Academy will be accepting all monetary donations at CupcakeCamp Charleston. Pattison's Academy, a 501(c)(3) organization, and PACE Charter School are the first of their kind in the Charleston, South Carolina area to provide the support and choices that parents and special needs children want and deserve. Pattison’s Academy’s mission is to improve the quality of life for children with multiple disabilities by providing comprehensive education and rehabilitation programs. Donations are tax deductible. Hullo, hula hoops! It's that time again to announce the contest! We figure we'd give you a six month head start to get those creative kitchens ready for batter, I mean, battle!
This year, the rules have changed. You may only enter one cupcake per category. For each category you are entering, please submit three cupcakes (one for each judge). This essentially makes it easy for our judging committee. For this contest, cupcakes must be regular sized. Please note that cupcakes will not be refrigerated so consider ingredients that may melt or spoil and affect overall judging. Entrants must fill out the Baker's Registration Form.

Categories

- Most Original will be based on original ingredients and design.

- Best Thanksgiving Theme will be based on Thanksgiving flavors and decoration.

Save the date!! CupcakeCamp Charleston is coming to Spirit Moves Studio, 445 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC (www.spiritmoves.com).

CARPOOLING is heavily encouraged!

DIRECTIONS:
Spirit Moves Studio is located at the foot of the overpass where Savannah Highway crosses Folly Rd. Blvd. heading downtown. It can be a little tricky so here's what you do:

From West Ashley or James Island, it's pretty simple - take Savannah Highway (17) like you're going downtown. Once you cross Wesley Dr. (the road that connects 17 and 61, by Ye Olde Fashioned Ice Cream), look for the overpass, and turn Right into the driveway at its base.

From East Cooper, downtown, or I-26 - you will cross the Ashley River Bridge, get off on Highway 61 (St. Andrews Blvd., the first road on the Right off the bridge), and then take the first Left, which is Wesley Blvd. Then take the next Left, which puts you on Savannah Highway, pointed back downtown. From there, look for the overpass, and turn Right into the driveway at its base. You're basically doing a little hook around to get there.

Just be ready for the turn!

There are two parking lots - one before the building, and a bigger one in back.

You can exit the parking lot either onto 17 headed downtown (or use the switchback on 17 to go back to West Ashley), or onto Folly Rd. headed to South Windermere.

2010 Judging Panel at CupcakeCamp Charleston

We are delighted to introduce to you this year's judging panel at CupcakeCamp Charleston!

Kristin Smith, Director of Sales, Aloft Charleston

Kristin Smith has been a foodie long before we called it foodie. It started with baking cakes, cupcakes, and cookies and has developed into gourmet savory dishes and wine. These days, she adores all things food and wine related.

She considered culinary school, specifically in pastry and baking, and was accepted into Johnson and Wales University. At that time, she wanted to be a wedding cake designer. Getting engaged to be married made her rethink her career, and Kristin decided to venture into Hospitality Management instead. She enrolled as a double major for Hospitality and Tourism and Business Management at the College of Charleston.

Hospitality Sales proved to be the best decision for her. She still gets to work with people and build relationships while being a foodie on the side. She is constantly reading, watching and taking classes to further her food knowledge. Kristin can be reached at sales@aloftcharlestonairport.com.

Akai Antia-obong, Art Director, West Of Newspaper

Akai Antia-obong is a self-trained Chef who grew up interested in cooking ever since he was a small child. He remembers his father always having an intense look on his face as if he were trying to see into a crystal ball and make sense out of the blurry images. As his father cooked, he would season a little bit, give things a taste, then steer the flavors where he wanted them to go. Many times Akai would get in trouble for trying to imitate his father's alchemist intensity with his own culinary creations.

Akai worked for chain restaurants for a couple of years (Applebee's and Ruby's to name a few) but where he really learned to orchestrate a meal was at Six Tables in Mt. Pleasant where he started as part-time help for the chef. The chef was amazed that Akai could make a Beurre Blanc without supervision. Soon after he became Sous Chef and then moonlit as a Head Chef at The Fat Hen in Johns Island before the restaurant found a permanent replacement.

Chef Bernd Gronert, Instructor Pastry Arts, Trident Technical College

Affectionately known as Chef B. to those who know him from the bakeries and the Charleston area, Chef Bernd Gronert was born in Bad Ems, Germany. Chef Bernd Gronert studied to be a Chef and Master Pastry Chef in Germany. He opened a sugar design school in Germany which was in operation until he moved to the United States at 26 years old and joined the Johnson & Wales University faculty in Providence, Rhode Island to teach chocolate, sugar artistry and advanced decoration. He also taught for the Charleston and Miami J & W campuses.

After ten years in Rhode Island, he moved to Charleston to teach at Trident Technical College in 1998, and also opened Rococo Bakeries (Charleston, Florence and Summerville locations) together with his twin brother (Chef Armin teaches Pastry Arts for Johnson and Wales at Charlotte, NC and is known as Chef A.). For two years from 2006-2008, Chef B. showcased his pastries every Friday morning on TV, about 100 live shows! He also runs his own farm in Ridgeville where he grows a variety of fruits.

- For those of you who register online before November 6, 2010, I will send you the cupcake schedule a day before.

- We will be distributing the cupcakes every 15-25 minutes, depending on the cupcake traffic.

- If you can bring a platter of some kind to place/display your cupcakes on, it would be great!

- Your cupcakes will be displayed by you. You have the option to create a themed display for your cupcakes, but keep in mind, you will be sharing space with other bakers (as the schedule and display space permits). You are welcome to refill your display as necessary; there will be space under the table to store extra cupcakes (in your own container or cooler--please label your property).

- Please bring a display sign with your name, title of cupcake, cupcake ingredients (for allergy warnings). Please wear gloves or bring tongs to handle the cupcakes safely to the public.

- If you change how many or what type of cupcakes, please email us the change cupcakecampcharleston@gmail.com.

- Not required, but we can always use help with getting enough napkins, paper plates, and plastic forks for everyone attending, so if you're willing to donate some, let me know.

- If you are entering the contest, please set aside an additional three cupcakes per category (Most Unique Ingredients, Best Charleston Themes & Best Decorated Cupcake). We encourage YOU to submit more than two dozen cupcakes. The more cupcakes we receive, the more people will be able to enjoy your cupcake creation!

- Feel free to wear your logos, hand out your business cards, etc. as you feel comfortable when it's your turn distributing your cupcakes. There will also be a separate table and wall for you to display your logos, cards, etc. as well that will remain throughout the event.

- Aloft will have their temperature lowered that afternoon for your cupcakes but please keep in mind they do not have space to refrigerate any cupcakes. They do have an ice machine in case you want bring a cooler.

- Aloft has a bar and they will be selling cupcaketinis, milk, coffee and tea. Don't forget to tip the bartenders!! :)

It's 32 days away and we are not going to hyperventilate into cupcake cups. Ok, one of us will probably freak the mothercup out and it's most likely the one authoring this post. But nevermind that, this is not about freaking out. This is about putting our fresh cupcakes forward and having the utmost faith in our friends and followers.

As you know, CupcakeCamp Charleston has been our sugar baby born just this February. It's been an amazing ride thus far and we know we couldn't have done it without your help. Our sponsor links have been updated (look to your right). We can't believe how far we've come and we know we haven't said it enough, we couldn't have done this without our sponsors. Yet we would love that sponsor links list to grow. Yea, we know that title didn't make sense but Fear does. Fear is a word that makes sense and since it's a Monday and the seesaw of attendees versus bakers is leaning heavily on one side, we're starting to freak out a little bit (ok, a lotta bit). The last thing we want to happen is what happened to CupcakeCamp NYC this past April. We must reiterate that this is a community effort. Although we'd love to bake 1000 cupcakes each, we know it would be unfair to those of you who would love the opportunity to bake and show off your tasty goods! Plus you would quickly grow bored of one flavor and its frosting (because that is all the time I have! I can't speak for my twin but I'm pretty sure she's in the same boat!). We met with the wonderstars at Aloft Charleston to discuss set up areas and golly gosh, we couldn't have asked for a more perfect place. They are unabashedly accommodating and gracious. We love you, Aloft!!

Here is a breakdown of what is going to take place:

1. Cupcaketinis & milk will be available at the bar.
2. Bakers' competition will take place outside on the lovely patio.
3. Plenty of parking, yay!
4. Cupcakes will be displayed in the center area with two tiers, rotating every 5-10 minutes.
5. Local vendors will be set up in a central area, too. Support your local indies, yo.

It has been a busy few weeks. Thanks for keeping our cupcakes in a row with your emails and support. We are up to 441 Twitterers and 100 "likes" or "fans" on Facebook. We met with a museum and a charity organization. There are possibly three more organizations that we're hoping to meet with soon. The biggest challenge is finding a FREE venue. If anyone can help, we could definitely use it! We are searching for a venue that can possibly host 200-400 sweet tooths with ample tables and chairs, too. Fall or next Spring is the ideal time for cupcakecamp Charleston, too.

We are also still looking for a ton of help, too. We cannot do this without the you, the community! We need volunteers, bakers and eaters. Spread the word like it's your favorite icing, yo! Thanks so much!

Life is short, eat a cupcake!

That's exactly what we did! Bacon pecan praline cupcakes for Easter, yay! Actually, we didn't follow the exact recipe. We cheated with time and used a yellow cake mix and store bought cream cheese frosting. However, we did make pecan pralines and grilled the bacon ourselves before serving it up as part of the topping. We decided to squirt some more southern charm and they were a hit! At least to our bellies! Here's a pic:

We are in the middle of talking to two charities to see if they want to work with us (who wouldn't?!) and are about to send out a few more letters to venues. For any ideas or suggestions, holler at your cupcakes.

WOWZA. Response to Twitter has been great! 112 followers and counting! Here's an update:
1. We are working on letters/emails to send out to venues.
a. If you have any suggestions for more venues, please let us know (Note: must be a FREE venue).
2. Facebook fan page is in the works.
3. Baker Registration form is next on the To Do list. In the meantime, if you'd like to be a baker, shoot us an email.
4. Volunteer form is also on the To Do list. We definitely need you! Here are the positions to consider: Set up, check-in, greeters, cupcake bouncers, cupcake carriers, and clean up crew. If you'd like to volunteer, please let us know in an email.
